Bing.com - The Future of Search Engines

by admin on Sep.04, 2009, under Bing.com, Google.com, search engines

Is Bing.com the future of search engines? Bing.com is fast becoming a very popular search engine. It is Microsoft’s new attempt at competing with Google. Interestingly, all the sites I have worked on recently have reached the top of Bing.com faster than in Google. So while I have gotten pages to the top of Google in just a few months, I have been able to get pages to the top of Bing in just a  few weeks. That is because Google focuses on on-page as well as external factors, whereas Bing.com clearly emphasizes more on on-page factors. For example, if a website’s on-page keyword structure is good but is competing with another website that is also decent, then the one with the most inbound links, for instance, may be the one that has a higher position in Google. However, on Bing, it seems the website with the best on-page keyword structure will win all the time. That means everything from the website URL, to meta data, header tags, to content. I think in the end SEO’s will find Bing.com easier to work with in some ways. It is still unclear which approach to search engines is better; and that will become clearer as more and more users begin to use Bing.

Joomla! Review

by admin on Jan.04, 2009, under Joomla!

One of the coolest things in web development is a CMS program called Joomla!

Joomla! is a pretty complete / and always growing CMS program designed in PHP and meant to work best with MYSQL databases. CMS stands for content management system, and it pretty much means that rather than saving things in HTML forms - such as website content for example - with Joomla! you can login on an administration page, as you would with a blog, type in the text content, click save, and the content shows up on the specified page. So there’s no need to continue editing HTML pages and uploading them to your server every time. With Joomla! you save the content in the backend and it is saved in the database. How easy is that? How to create a popup message in Dreamweaver

by admin on Jan.03, 2009, under Dreamweaver, HTML

The process of creating a pop-up message in Dreamweaver is very simple. Dreamweaver writes out all the underlying code for you. All you have to do is know how to do it.

First get yourself a copy of Dreamweaver - if you are reading this, I’ll assume you got this covered.

Then, follow me:

Start an HTML page and type in "If I click here a pop-up message will appear" or something like that.

Start an HTML page and type in "If I click here a pop-up message window will open.

How to get rid of the DMOZ description in Google search

by admin on Dec.27, 2008, under Crawlers, DMOZ, Description, Googlebot, HTML Tags, Keywords, Meta Tags, Robots

If you are lucky enough to get into the DMOZ directory, aka the Open Directory Project or ODP - it takes forever to get included in the directory - you may find that your description in Google search is the same as the one you submitted to DMOZ. In the past webmasters and SEOs submitted their site to DMOZ in order to control what is displayed in Google search. Even the description meta tag was overlooked and the DMOZ description given priority. The problem was that some descriptions in DMOZ were outdated and webmasters and SEOs would have to update the description in DMOZ. Now, think about it, if it takes forever to get included in the directory, how long do you think it took to get your description to get updated? To make matters even worse you had to abide by the rules in DMOZ for description - you had to keep it short, concise, and bland. How could you control your description once DMOZ has accepted your URL submission?

So Google came up with a way for webmasters to tell the Google robot crawlers that you prefer not to use the description in DMOZ but rather the one in the description meta tag. The solution they came up with was a command you can include in your Robots meta tag. (continue reading…)

Are Meta Tags Important?

View Source - Meta Tag View

A meta tag, also known as an HTML tag, is a bit of code between the two header tags in your source code that tells search engines what your site is all about. In our opinion meta tags are very important. While we have seen some sites rank high in search engines without the use of meta tags, we believe that they “can” play a role in your search engine optimization efforts.

Many SEOs have different opinions about the effectiveness of meta tags in search engine optimization. I have seen many websites without meta tags rank higher in search engine results due to other factors such as high PageRank and site/domain age. However, if you want to use best practices, you should definitely consider using meta tags. And, in many cases it works - I have seen pages sky rocket to the first page of search engines after meta tags were effectively optimized. (continue reading…)
